Our Why
On March 26, 2023, Dr. Sheila Lytle Moore passed away. She dedicated over 40 years of her life to Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital as a pediatric oncologist. She was an integral part of bringing legitimacy to Dream Day Foundation and Fishin’ Galore when she attended and spoke at Fishin’ Galore in our early years. Fishin’ Galore allowed her and other staff members to spend time with their patients outside of the hospital setting. We can attribute a lot of our footing as a nonprofit to her trust in our mission and services to St. Jude families in those early years.
Her Professional Story
Dr. Moore graduated as 1 of 7 females in her medical school class. Sheila worked at Earl K. Long Medical Center focusing on pediatric illnesses that were difficult to diagnose and treat. She worked with pediatric sickle cell patients & AIDS patients. As the only pediatric oncologist in Baton Rouge, she initiated a clinic at Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital. She frequently referred patients to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN. In 1998, St. Jude partnered with Dr. Moore/Our Lady of the Lake to open the St. Jude Affiliate Clinic. She was still working 4 days a week until she retired at age 83.
Her Personal Story
She is remembered for her immense generosity, quick wit and astounding intelligence. She was a loving mother to two successful men and a proud, supportive grandmother. She attended St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church. She was a lover of Scifi, the Appalachian mountains, estate sales, sauvignon blanc, animals, gemstones, anything Irish, and gardening. Sheila frequented Baton Rouge Little Theater, Baton Rouge Ballet and Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra. She was also wrote poetry to help her process grieving her patients.
