On Saturday, February 2, 2013 over 200 people attended a day of wild game cooking at Sandy’s Daiquiris in Erwinville, LA with a silent and live auction following a feast of deer meat jambalaya; venison spaghetti;, rabbit spaghetti; crawfish, crabmeat and Andouille pastalaya; Cajun balls, squirrel gumbo, wild hog; fried catfish and hush puppies, alligator, dove and duck just to name a few. The judges were really challenged to decide on the winning dish from the wonderful array of cooks and wild game dishes. First place went to Larry Dees, Jr. with his bacon wrap alligator. Second place winners were Duke Landry and Rusty Lejeune who wowed the crowd with stuffed roasted duck and third place went to Randy Sexton cooking his stuffed bacon wrap dove. Too many special desserts were delivered to name them all, but Melinda Maranto out did herself with the most beautiful and tasty muffins, so fancy they could have come from New York City.
A special thank you to the main event sponsor H & E Equipment and the other sponsors: Bowie Outfitters, John and Bonnie Chavanne, Commercial Metals Company, NRG Energy Inc., Nugent Steel and Supply Company, T. Barry Wilkinson, Attorney, and Brian and Jackie Tucker with Merrill Lynch. Without these sponsors and all the donors of over 65 auction items the event could not have been possible. A tribute goes out to Sandy Duhon who every year has donated Sandy’s Reception Hall for a perfect venue for outdoor cooking and indoor food and fun. Coca Cola, Mockler Beverage, and Crescent Crown Distributing rounded out the refreshments.
Raising money for the Dream Day Foundation which benefits St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is second nature to Dream Day Board Members Floyd and Betty Edwards and Cathy and Jerry Edwards who have been hosting this event since 2000. Last year’s event coincided with the 50th anniversary of St. Jude Children’s Hospital where no child is denied treatment based on their ability to pay.
All auction items were donated by either businesses or people wanting to do what they can for Dream Day Foundation and the children of St. Jude that it supports. Sharmon and Jason Schexnaildre not only donated some wonderful items but also ran the silent and live auction. The event raised over $17,000 for the Dream Day Foundation and the children of St. Jude.
